Prince Alfred Square

Prince Alfred Square has a rather illustrious history; the site of Australia’s first gaol in 1797, it was burned down by inmates only to be replaced by a two story stone building and the first female factory. It honours Prince Alfred, the first British monarch to visit Australia in 1867, who upon his return visit, was shot in the back with a revolver by the first person in Australia to attempt political assassination! He was unsuccessful and the Prince made a full recovery.

Sydney Festival will transform Prince Alfred Square into a circus wonderland during the 2017 festival season.
