Beneath the artificial hill that is home to Sydney’s new native botanic garden is the Cutaway, a main feature of the re-created headland at Barangaroo Reserve. The unique, super-sized cultural venue hosts everything from art exhibitions and food events, to commercial activities.
It is an engineering masterpiece – the largest subterranean internal space in Australia, with a roof constructed using bridge technology, and all located beneath 12,000 cubic metres of rock, grass and mature trees.
the Cutaway also incorporates the Merriman St sandstone wall that is a graphic reminder of the area’s maritime heritage. The wall is open to the sky and re-imagined as a raw backdrop to the cultural activities inside.
